Keep It Away: How To Create A Mold Prevention Plan For Your Home

Posted on: 8 July 2020

If you've had to have mold removed from your home, you want to make sure you don't have a repeat occurrence. One way to do that is to have a strong prevention plan. Having a plan in place for mold prevention can help to protect your home. If you're not sure how to design a mold prevention plan for your home, here are four tips to get you started.

Pre-Treat Your Walls

If your home suffered significant mold damage, start your prevention plan at the walls. You might not realize this, but the way you paint your walls plays a big role in mold prevention. If you apply ordinary paint directly to the bare drywall, you increase the risk for mold. That's because there's nothing there to block out the moisture and stop the mold spores. That's where sealant comes into the picture. To keep mold out of your house, pre-treat your paint with a mold inhibitor. Adding a mold inhibitor will give your paint the ability to stop mold growth.

Choose the Right Flooring

If you need to replace your flooring as part of the mold remediation project, make the right choice. Using carpeting in high-moisture areas of your home increases the risk for mold growth. That's because moisture can build up deep inside the carpet fibers and padding. When that happens, you can end up with mold growth inside your carpeting. To avoid that, never install carpeting in high-moisture areas of your home.

Improve Ventilation in Your Home

If you've got ventilation problems in your home, there's a good chance you'll end up with mold growth again. Mold thrives in moist environments, especially homes with poor ventilation. One way to improve ventilation is to open your windows for at least an hour each day. Open windows allow for cross-ventilation. If you don't have fans in your attic, have those installed as part of your mold remediation project. Finally, consider installing a dehumidifier in your home. That way, you eliminate any moisture problems that might exist.

Make Some Changes in the Yard

Finally, if you're recovering from a mold explosion inside your home, it's time to make some changes around the yard. If you don't have gutters on your home, have those installed. Gutters help keep moisture away from the foundation of your home. Also, if you notice water pooling around the foundation, change the slope of your yard. The soil may be sloping towards your home, which is allowing water to collect near your home. To avoid mold problems, make sure the water flows away from your home.
